Working with Shame and Grandiosity Somatically

Wednesday, July 29th at 1pm CT

Replay available

Shame isn't just insecurity.
And grandiosity isn't just confidence with a personality disorder.
In this workshop, you'll learn how to support clients working with shame and grandiosity in a way that is grounded, body-based, and actually helpful.

Most people think shame only looks like collapse.
But shame has range.

It can look like shutting down, people-pleasing, freezing, apologizing for existing, over-explaining, perfectionism, defensiveness, blame, control — or acting like you're above it all because being human suddenly feels way too exposed.

Shame lives in the body. And grandiosity is often part of the same system.

Sometimes shame gets small. Sometimes it gets big. Sometimes it hides. Sometimes it performs.
In this workshop, we'll talk about how to work with shame and grandiosity somatically — without trying to fix it, force vulnerability, or accidentally make the defense worse by coming at it too hard.
What You’ll Learn

• Why shame is not just a thought pattern or mindset issue

• How shame shows up in the body and nervous system

• How grandiosity can be part of shame, just expressed differently

• How to recognize the difference between collapsed shame and inflated shame

• How shame can show up as perfectionism, self-criticism, defensiveness, superiority, blame, over-functioning, or emotional shutdown

• How to help clients stay connected to what they feel without collapsing, disappearing, or armoring up

• The importance of resourcing, pacing, titration, and co-regulation when working with shame

• How to support clients without shaming the defense, pathologizing the protection, or trying to rip away the coping strategy too fast

• How to help clients notice what is happening underneath performance, control, self-attack, or
grandiosity
Tools to Support Your Clients and Yourself
This won’t just be theory.

You'll walk away with simple, practical tools you can use in sessions and in your own life — for when shame shows up, hijacks the room, and starts making everything weird.

We'll cover:
• Grounding and orienting
• Resourcing practices
• Tracking shame in the body
• Simple ways to help someone stay with what they feel in manageable doses
• How to work with both collapsed shame and inflated shame
•How to recognize when a client is protecting themselves through shutdown, perfectionism, defensiveness, or grandiosity
• Gentle ways to widen capacity without bypassing what hurts

Who This Is For
This workshop is for coaches, therapists, healers, and practitioners who want to better support clients navigating shame, self-criticism, perfectionism, defensiveness, grandiosity, and the complicated emotional mess that comes with feeling exposed, not enough, or too much. It's also for the practitioner who wants better language, better tools, and a more grounded way of being with shame, without trying to fix people, flatten defenses, or turn every protective strategy into a pathology lesson.
Why This Matters

When clients are in shame, they do not need us to clean it up.

They need help staying with themselves.

They need support noticing what happens in their body before they disappear, perform, defend, attack themselves, or puff up.

They need permission to be where they are — without making their protective strategies mean they are broken.

They need tools that help them stay in contact with themselves in manageable doses.

That's what this workshop is about.

Description of Coaching
Coaching is a partnership (defined as an alliance, not a legal business partnership) between the Coach
and the Client in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires the Client to maximize personal

does not prevent, cure, or treat any mental disorder or medical disease.
Client acknowledges that coaching is a comprehensive process that may involve different areas of his or her life, including work, finances, health, relationships, education and recreation.
The Client agrees that deciding how to handle these issues, incorporate coaching principles
into those areas and implementing choices is exclusively the Client’s responsibility.
Client acknowledges that coaching does not involve the diagnosis or treatment of mental
disorders as defined by the American Psychiatric Association and that coaching is not to
be used as a substitute for counseling, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, mental health care,
substance abuse treatment, or other professional advice by legal, medical or other qualified
professionals and that it is the Client’s exclusive responsibility to seek such independent professional guidance as needed. If Client is currently under the care of a mental health professional, it is recommended that the Client promptly inform the mental health care provider of
the nature and extent of the coaching relationship agreed upon by the Client and the Coach.
The Client understands that in order to enhance the coaching relationship, the Client agrees
